Description

Wing span: 38 - 42 mm; body length: 30 - 36 mm
 
This is a southern species which is gradually spreading north. It is not found in Britain.
 
Males have a unique goblet-shaped mark on S2, and their tail light is shifted to the extreme tip of the abdomen. Females are rather dull with a blue middle to their abdomen. The pterostigma are long and pale.
 
Males often fly fast and low over open water, perching on aquatic vegetation. The species prefers large well-oxygenated waters such as lakes and gravel pits. The main flight period is July and August.
