Description

Wingspan: 66 - 72 mm; Body length: 47 - 54 mm
 
A dark, slender emerald easily identified by its brilliant green eyes and the orange-yellow streaks on the upperside of the slender, dark clubbed abdomen. Males patrol short stretches of calm, tree-lined rivers.
 
It is endemic to south-west Europe and Morocco. Locally common, its occurence north of France is sporadic. It is extinct in Britain. Its prefered habitat is slow-flowing tree-lined rivers and streams. The flight period is from late May to the end of August.
