Description

Wingspan: 60 - 66 mm; Body length: 32 - 39 mm

This species is also known as the Yellow-spotted Whiteface. It is mainly found in eastern Europe, and is the only Leucorrhinia in Turkey and much of the Balkans. It extends westwards into central France. Most populations are local and small.

The conspicuous yellow spot on S7 makes identification easy. Mature males have red marks on S3 to S6; these fade with age. The female has large yellow markings on S2 - S7.

It generally inhabits relatively acidic waters. Vegetation is typically lush and varied, with both emergent and submerged species. Males often patrol among tall, emergent plants, seldom perching on low, flat surfaces.

The main flight period is from late May to the end of July.
