L: 32 - 35 cm; WS: 49 - 53 cm

The Nutcracker is about the size of a Jay, but has a long powerful beak and a short tail. It has dark brown plumage with small white spots. The crown and wings are un-spotted.

It can be found in mountainous areas in central Europe and the Balkans. European breeders are resident.

It breeds almost exclusively where it has access to spruce forests.

It caches nuts and seeds in the autumn, and can re-find them in winter with great accuracy.

The Nutcracker is regarded as of Least Concern.
