Description

Wing span: 46 - 52mm

This butterfly has yellow upper surfaces, with black spots and bars. The hindwings have red spots and are heavily toothed. Males are less heavily marked than females.

Widespread but local in S and E Europe from SE France eastwards.

It is found in various dry and bushy habitats, meadows, roadsides and neglected cultivations.

There is one brood per year, with a prolonged emergence between February and early July.

The larvae feed on many species of birthworts (Aristolochia spp).
