(© David Hastings) (1/800th sec at f/13) DescriptionFamily: Crambidae (ABH : 63.114) Wing span: 24 - 32mm The fore-wing is variably shaded pale to dark brown with three large white blotches, ringed with brown lines, several small white blotches and a pale brown terminal band. The female is larger and paler than the male. It can be found throughout the British Isles. Habitats are ditches, bog pools, lakes, marshes, gravel pits, ponds, slow-flowing rivers and canals. The flight period is from late May to early September. Larvae feed on a range of water plants, including Bur-reeds, Frogbit, pondweeds and water plantains. The larvae are aquatic. It is readily disturbed from waterside vegetation during the day, and comes to light. Earliest UK sighting: 9th June ; Latest UK sighting: 5th September Sightings
