Foresters & Burnets (Zygaenidae)
Species
There are three species of Forester and seven species of Burnet moth in the UK. Typically they live in self-contained colonies, and as a consequence a number of differences have evolved, some of which are recognised as races or subspecies.

The adult moths generally fly by day. All have round-tipped, rather narrow forewings that are held at a steep angle close to the body when at rest. The stout antennae are forward-facing, and clubbed. Both adults and larvae are toxic to non-insect predators, releasing chemicals like hydrogen cyanide when attacked.
