Description

Family: Crambidae (ABH : 63.031)

Wing span: 18 - 22mm

This moth has an orangey-brown to chestnut fore-wing, with a fine, sometimes obscure serrated cross-line at two-thirds, which is curved round a squarish grey mark at about one-half.

It is an immigrant, and can be found anywhere. It is probably resident on the Isles of Scilly and possibly in other parts of SW England.

It can be found in any habitat, but is usually most numerous in coastal locations.

It can be seen at any time of year, but is most abundant in late summer and autumn. Where resident it has continuous generations, with larvae or pupae over-wintering in greenhouses.

Larvae feed on a wide range of plants, including burdocks, Hemp-agrimony, lettuces, Dark Mullein, mints and woundworts.

It is readily disturbed by day, comes to light and feeds at flowers.
