When at rest, with its wings held steeply over its body, it closely resembled a bird dropping. The silvery mark on its fore-wing is said to resemble a Chinese character. It is found throughout England and Wales, except on the highest ground, southern Scotland and most of Ireland. Habitats are hedgerows, scrub, open woodland and gardens. There are two generations, late April to early June, and July to early September. It overwinters as a pupa. Larvae feed mainly on Blackthorn, Hawthorn and Crab Apple. It comes to light in small numbers. Earliest UK sighting: 21st June ; Latest UK sighting: 4th September Sightings
