Description

Family: Erebidae (ABH : 72.036)

Wing span: 20 - 24mm

This species has strongly transparent wings. The fore-wing has two solid, dark, irregularly-V-shaped cross-lines and a dark spot before the centre. The hind-wing is plain.

It is quite well distributed in most of the British Isles, but is very local in SE England, and is absent from northern Scotland.

Habitats are mostly open, stony places with drystone or other field boundary walls, or hedgerows.

There is one generation from late June to early August. It over-winters as a larva.

Larvae feed on small lichens on stone walls, rocks, posts and isolated bushes.

Males come readily to light.

Earliest UK sighting: 19th June ; Latest UK sighting: 20th July
