Description

Family: Erebidae (ABH : 72.029)

Wing span: 46 - 54mm

This moth's iridescent black forewing with white and yellow spots, and largely red hindwing, are diagnostic.

It is quite well distributed in south-west and central southern England, the SW Midlands and Wales.

It prefers damp places such as fens, marshes, river banks, damp meadows, and coastal habitats. Males disperse widely into gardens, woodlands and along ditches.

There is one generation in June and July. It over-winters as a larva.

Common Comfrey is the main larval foodplant. Hemp Agrimony and Hound's-tongue are also used.

It flies by day, often resting on vegetation. Males patrol widely in the late afternoon.
