Description

Family: Geometridae

Wing span: 24 - 30mm

This is a very variable moth. The ground colour varies from white to warm light brown, yellowish-brown or dark grey. The fore- and hind-wings often have several dark brown bands. Males have feathery antennae.

It is found throughout the British Isles, but patchy in the east Midlands and East Anglia.

It is most abundant on acid heathland and moorland. It can also be found on calcareous and neutral grassland.

It over-winters as a pupa. There is one generation in May/June, with a small second one in August.

Larvae feed on heathers on heathland and moorland, and trefoils, clovers and vetches elsewhere.

It is active during the day.
