Description

Family: Geometridae (ABH : 70.119)

Wing span: 34 - 40mm

A rich brown moth, with a broad, rather tapered forewing. The darker central cross-band is strongly angled at the leading edge. The outer margins of both wings are scalloped.

It is found in central southern and SE England, East Anglia and the Midlands, but is scarce in SW England, S Wales, northern England and Ireland. It is absent from Scotland.

Habitats are woodland, scrub and hedgerows, particularly on calcareous soils.

There is one generation in July and August. It over-winters as an egg.

Larvae feed on Buckthorn and possibly Alder Buckthorn.

It is sometimes disturbed from the foodplant by day. It flies at dusk and comes to light.
