Description

Family: Geometridae (ABH : 70.193)

Wing span: 32 - 38mm

This species is very similar to the Treble-bar, but on average is slightly smaller and has less intense dark cross-bands. The abdomen tip is blunt in both sexes.

It is largely restricted to the southern half of Britain and areas east of the Pennines. In Scotland, it is locally frequent around the Firth of Forth.

Habitats include calcareous grassland, woodland rides, disused quarries, field margins and gardens.

It over-winters as a larva. There are two generations, May to June, and August to September.

St John's-wort is the only larval foodplant.

Easily disturbed by day. It flies at dusk and comes to light.

Earliest UK sighting: 6th May ; Latest UK sighting: 28th September
