Male. Taken at Standlake Common, Oxon., on April 16th 2023. (© David Hastings) (1/1000th sec at f11) DescriptionFamily: Geometridae (ABH : 70.067) Wing span: 28 - 32mm This moth is quite distinctive. The quite rounded fore-wing has a broad, pale central band, thickly edged with black on the basal side, and with a deeply elbowed outer margin, which is darkened only in the leading half. This appears to stream away from the leading edge, hence the name. Fresh specimens may show a pinkish tinge. It can be found throughout the British Isles. Habitats are open woodland, rides and edges, hedgerows, gardens and other scrubby places. There is one generation in April and May. It over-winters as a pupa. Larvae feed on Dog-rose and probably other species of wild rose. It flies from dusk and comes to light. It can sometimes be found on fences by day. Earliest UK sighting: 9th April ; Latest UK sighting: 2nd May Sightings
