Description

Wing span: 24 - 28mm

This moth is quite variable in colour, but its upright resting posture, with wings held at a steep angle, and plain white hindwings make it easily recognisable. The colour of the adult depends on the temperature experienced by the pupa. Thus, immigrants from southern Europe tend to be more brightly coloured than those that have developed further north.

As an immigrant it can be found almost anywhere, but is most likely to be found in southern Britain.

Habitats are warm, open, sunny places.

Immigrants arrive from April to November, but it is most likely to be found in August and September, when any home-bred moths also emerge. It is continuously brooded in southern Europe and North Africa, but is unable to overwinter in the British Isles.

Larvae have been found on Knotgrass in the wild.

It is easily disturbed by day, but doesn't usually fly far, often resting on a grass stem.
