No other species has the combination of a yellow-orange ground colour on both wings, and numerous fine, wavy brownish cross-lines. It is found throughout the British Isles. It can be found in many habitats, including gardens, hedgerows, grassland, woodland, marshes and sand dunes. It over-winters as a larva. There is one generation from June to August. Larvae feed on cleavers and other bedstraws, wormwoods, docks, sorrels, dandelions and other low-growing plants. Often disturbed by day. Only comes sparingly to light.
