Description

Family: Hepialidae (ABH : 3.001)

Wing span: M: 24 - 36mm; F: 30 - 52mm

The male Orange Swift has distinctive bright orange-brown forewings, with two whiteish diagonal lines forming an open V. The female is duller. Both sexes vary greatly in size.

It can be found throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

It is common in gardens, roadside verges, downland, moorland, woodland rides and other rough grassy places.

The larva over-winters twice and pupates underground. Adults are on the wing from late June to early September.

The larvae feed on the roots of many herbaceous plants, including dock, dandelion, bracken and probably grasses.

It comes to light, and is often attracted to house lights.
