The female is duller and slightly brownish. It is well distributed in England north into Yorkshire, but possibly declining in the Midlands and south-east. Scarce west of the Pennines. Widespread in Scotland (except the south-west), and local in Wales and Ireland. Habitats are open woodland, hedgerows, heathland, moorland, scrub and gardens. There is one generation, in August and September. It over-winters as an egg on the food plant. Larvae feed mainly on birches, Blackthorn and hawthorns, also on sallows, oaks and heathers.
