(© David Hastings) (1/250th sec at f11) DescriptionFamily: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.180) Wing span: 28 - 32mm This species has a pinkish-red or purplish-brown forewing, with a broad, wavy-edged orange or orange-yellow central band. It is found in England north to Cumbria and County Durham, but not the far south-west. It is very local in W Wales and absent from Scotland and Ireland. Habitats are broad-leaved woodland, mature hedgerows, scrubby farmland, downland and some gardens. There is one generation from September to early November. The egg is the over-wintering stage. Larvae feed mainly on Field Maple and Beech, and probably other broad-leaved trees. It comes to light and sugar, and feeds on Ivy flowers and over-ripe berries.
