Its only conspicuous feature is the whiteish outer edging of the kidney mark. It doesn't have feathered antennae. It is widespread in the British Isles. Habitats are heathland, moorland, calcareous grassland, roadside verges, woodland rides and gardens. There is one generation in September and October. It over-winters as a small larva. Larvae feed on various woody and herbaceous plants, including Heather, Blackthorn and clovers. It comes to light and sugar, and feeds at flowers and blackberries.
