Description

Family: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.074)

Wing span: 32 - 38mm

This species has a bold grey kidney mark with a diffuse brown blotch adjacent on the leading edge. A darker outer band is further darkened at the leading edge to form a roughly triangular blotch. There is a bold black dot at the trailing corner. Ground colour is temperature-dependant, and varies from straw-yellow to orange-brown.

It is mostly found in southern England and Wales, but is occasionally recorded further north. It is primarily coastal, but can also be found inland.

As an immigrant it has been recorded in every season. Larvae occur in some years, feeding on the flowers of Common Restharrow, Ploughman's-spikenard, Sticky Grounsel and cultivated marigolds. None of its life stages can survive the winter in the British Isles.

Earliest UK sighting: 17th June ; Latest UK sighting: 30th October
