(© David Hastings) (1/800th sec at f11) DescriptionFamily: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.267) Wing span: 28 - 34mm This species has a uniformly warm brown fore-wing, with an orange blotch in the kidney mark and a fine chalky-white outer cross-line forming a 'W'. It can be found throughout the British Isles. It can be found in most habitats. It is abundant in gardens and other cultivated land, including glasshouses. There is one generation per year from May to late July in most places. In southern Britain there is usually a small second generation from August to September. Larvae feed on a wide range of wild and cultivated herbaceous and woody plants, including Common Nettle, Fat-hen, willowherbs, St John's-wort, English Elm, Hazel and Hop.
