Description

Wing span: 28 - 38mm

This moth has reddish-brown or rich brown forewings, with golden-yellow blotches dusted with brown. Two silvery-white central marks are the most conspicuous feature.

It is quite well distributed and fairly frequent in suitable habitat throughout the British Isles.

It is found in a range of mostly damp habitats, including ditch-banks, canals, rivers, fens and marshland.

There are two generations in southern Britain, late May to June, and late July to September. There is one generation from late June to August in northern Britain. It over-winters as a small larva.

Larvae feed on Tufted-sedge, Glaucous Sedge, Yellow Iris, Branched Bur-weed and Water-plantain.

It flies at dusk, when it comes to flowers.
