(© David Hastings) (1/2000th sec at f11) DescriptionFamily: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.085) Wing span: 24 - 30mm This species is similar to the Marbled Beauty. The main distinguishing feature is the incomplete inner central cross-line on the fore-wing, which fails to meet the training edge. The ground colour is greenish-white, pastel green, bright lichen green or olive-green. It is fairly frequent on south and south-west coasts of England and Wales, and it occurs inland in southern England. Habitats are rocky places on the coast, also inland on calcareous soils, especially where there are stone walls. There is one generation in July and August. It over-winters as a small larva among the food-plant. Larvae feed on lichens growing on walls and rocks. It comes to light, sugar and flowers, and can often be found resting on walls by day.
