Description

Family: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.255)

Wing span: 28 - 32mm

This species has a quite large kidney mark, with the trailing edge always darker than the ground colour. Its fore-wing is rather narrow at the base, and pointed with a straight leading edge. The ground colour is pale to dark brownish-grey, usually dusted with grey giving a finely variegated effect. The outer cross-line forms a distinct pale 'W' shape.

It is mainly found in England from Yorkshire southwards. It is scarce in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. As an immigrant it can turn up anywhere.

Habitats are usually open, disturbed places, including gardens, waste ground, downland, fens and open woodland.

There are two over-lapping generations between April and September, peaking in August. It over-winters as a pupa.

Larvae feed on herbaceous plants, particularly goosefoots, Common Orache and other related species.

It comes to light, sugar and flowers.
