Description

Family: Noctuidae

Wing span: 60 - 72mm

An unmistakable large, dark brown moth, with a very broad forewing.

It can be found throughout the British Isles, but is local in Scotland.

Habitats include riverbanks, marshes, gardens, hedgerows, scrub and woodland.

There is one generation from July to September. It over-winters as a small larva.

In the autumn, larvae feed on herbaceous plants. In spring, they switch to woody plants, including ivy, Hawthorn, birches and spindles.

It doesn't come to light very much. It comes to sugar in much greater numbers, and also to aphid honeydew and sap runs.
