Description

Family: Noctuidae (ABH : 73.189)

Wing span: 30 - 36mm

This species has a rather broad, slate-grey fore-wing. The outermost cross-line is reddish-brown, edged with yellow. The trailing half of the kidney mark is usually intensely black.

It can be found throughout the British Isles.

Habitats are woodland rides, scrub and hedgerows in open country, also river valleys, marshes and heathland.

There is one generation from September to November. It over-winters as an egg.

Larvae feed on the catkins and leaves of willows.

It comes to light and sugar, and feeds on Ivy flowers and over-ripe berries.
