Description

Wing span: 26 - 42mm

This species is named from the clear, metallic, silver Y mark on its forewings. The forewing is marbled brown and grey.

It can be found through the British Isles.

Adults invade most habitats in search of nectar.

The Silver Y is an immigrant. It can be found at any time of year, although it is most common from May to September. Winter survival is rare.

Larvae feed on many low-growing wild and cultivated herbaceous plants. It is sometimes a horticultural pest, particularly in southern Europe.

It is often active during the day, visiting flowers. It comes to light, sometimes in large numbers.
