Description

Family: Sphingidae (ABH : 69.010)

Wing span: 40 - 48mm

This moth resembles a hummingbird as it flies rapidly between plants. The orange-brown hind-wings and the underside of fore-wings can be seen in flight. When settled with its wings closed it is remarkably well camouflaged.

It can occur anywhere in the British Isles, from coastal sites to gardens.

The adult is the over-wintering stage, and it is capable of doing this in SW England. But most adults are immigrants from the continent, usually arriving in July, August and September.

Larvae feed on Lady's Bedstraw, Hedge Bedstraw and Wild Madder.

It is usually active by day, but also flies at night when on migration. It feeds on tubular flowers such as Viper's-bugloss, Red Valerian, phlox and buddleias.
