(© David Hastings) (1/800th sec at f14) Description Family: Zygaenidae (ABH : 54.008) Wing span: 30 - 34mm This is the only British burnet with six spots on the forewing. Very occasionally the red is replaced with yellow. It is found widely in the British Isles. Habitats include downland, permanent pasture, woodland rides and sand dunes. The larva is the over-wintering stage (sometimes twice). The cocoon is formed in an exposed position on a grass stem. Adults are on the wing from late June to August. Larvae feed mainly on Common Bird's-foot Trefoil. Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil may also be used. Males patrol, searching for unmated females.
