Click image for larger version. © David Hastings) Description L: 17 - 19.5 cm Kingfishers are small, unmistakable, bright blue and orange birds. The sexes are similar, but males have an all-black bill. It is mostly found in England, Wales and southern Ireland, and is increasing its range in Scotland. Kingfishers are found by still or slow flowing water such as lakes, canals and rivers in lowland areas. In winter, some individuals move to estuaries and the coast. They fly low and fast over water, and hunt fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface. The Kingfisher is on the Amber list because of its unfavourable conservation status in Europe. There are between 4000 and 8000 pairs in the UK.
