Buntings are small, predominately ground-dwelling birds, with stout seed-eating bills like finches. However, they take a wider range of food than finches and have not developed the specialised bills shown by many species of finch. They inhabit a wide variety of habitat from deserts to marshes, and woodland to bare mountains.
