Description

L: 54 - 60 cm; WS: 110 - 125 cm

A medium-sized goose. It has striking chestnut-red, black and white plumage. The head is rounded and the bill is small.

It is migratory, breeding in the high Russian Arctic and wintering mainly in SE Romania and NE Bulgaria. It is a rare vagrant in W Europe.

Breeding habitat is arctic tundra near coasts or along river mouths, often together with birds of prey as protection against Arctic Foxes.

It is regarded as Endangered by the IUCN as nearly the whole global population of the species over-winters in the Dobrudja region.
