Description

L: 32 - 35 cm; WS: 54 - 58 cm

A generally shy bird, which is difficult to approach. It is mainly pinkish-brown with a white throat and vent, and has a small blue panel on the wings. It has a loud and distinctive alarm call. The sexes are similar.

The Jay is widely distributed in the UK and Europe.

It breeds in various types of woodland (coniferous and deciduous), as well as in larger wooded parks.

Jays collect and cache acorns and other nuts in the autumn.

It has Green status. There are around 170000 breeding territories in the UK.
