Click image for larger version. © David Hastings) Description L: 24 - 27 cm; WS: 47 - 53 cm The Redshank is a medium-sized wading bird. It has longish red legs and a long, straight bill. It is grey-brown above and whitish below. In flight, it shows very obvious white rear edges to the wings and a white 'V-shape' up its back. The greatest concentrations of breeding birds are in parts of Scotland and north-west England. Redshank breed on inland and coastal marshes, wet meadows and moorland. Drainage of farmland and overgrazing of coastal marshes are removing breeding habitat, making Redshank increasingly dependent on nature reserves. The Redshank has amber status on the UK list.
