L: 12.5 - 14 cm

When creeping over a rock face, it can be hard to see until it flashes its crimson-red wings.

It is found in montane places, eg the Alps, Pyrennes and Balkan mountains. In winter it will descend to lower altitudes.

It lives on sheer cliff faces, at 1000 - 3000m altitude.
